NEW RECORD FOR FIREARMS BACKGROUND CHECK SET ON BLACK FRIDAY
Lee’s Summit, Mo. (December 7, 2016) – The FBI processed a record-breaking number of firearms background checks this Black Friday. On November 25, the FBI processed 185,713 gun background checks, enough to supply the all active duty Marines with at least one firearm.
The previous single-day record of 185,345 was set last Black Friday. Frontier Justice, a firearms retailer in Lee’s Summit, only accounts for a small portion of those, but they also saw a bump in the number of background checks they processed on Black Friday.
“People love buying firearms on Black Friday because there are great deals, of course, but also because going to the shooting range is a fun activity for the whole family,” said Bren Brown, President of Frontier Justice. “There’s something for every member of the family at our store.”
Black Friday is the biggest retail shopping day of the year, but some may be surprised to hear that guns are included in the shopping frenzy. Historically, gun sales are high during the holiday season, but the past couple of years have been exceptionally busy for the industry.
Firearm sales have soared this year. In November alone, the FBI processed more than 2.5 million background checks, which was 318,000 more than November of the previous year. That brings total background checks this year to more than 24 million, not including December. And because numerous firearms can be purchased with each background check, total gun sales could, in fact, surpass that number.
Additionally, with both Kansas and Missouri (as of January 1, 2017) now allowing constitutional carry (i.e., permitless carry), some residents are eager to purchase a handgun for concealed carry. For those who plan to carry without a permit, Frontier Justice strongly recommends taking a safety class.
